How can we help increase accessibility to renewable energy? Transition Town Shoreham has been asking these questions — and we think we have some answers. Homeowners, renters, landlords and local businesses can submit an expression of interest for fully-funded solar and battery installations, delivered with BHESCo, at no upfront cost. We were delighted to meet with Kayla Ente MBE from BHESCo (Brighton & Hove Energy Services Co-operative) and hear all about how this social enterprise/ energy co-operative has spent over a decade proving there’s a fairer way - owned by communities and run for their benefit. After a successful pilot in Brighton, BHESCo has developed an innovative solar-and-battery model that makes solar accessible to everyone, whatever your budget. There's no need for savings, a big roof or technical know-how - BHESCo funds, fits and looks after everything. Residents simply pay less for the clean power their panels generate. We are delighted that BHESCo have prioritised Shoreham and Southwick as next in line for their Solar Powered Communities programme. With plenty of South Coast sunshine, it makes perfect sense. Transition Town Shoreham is proud to be working with BHESCo to bring this initiative to the area. This can mean lower bills, stronger resilience, cleaner energy and a community benefit fund to support local projects across Shoreham and Southwick. How does the programme work? BHESCo installs solar panels and battery storage on your roof at no upfront cost to you. They own and maintain the entire system for 25 years, so any repairs or servicing are on BHESCo, not you. You enter into a contract with BHESCo and buy the clean electricity your panels generate, at a fixed, lower rate than you currently pay your energy supplier. You do not need to switch suppliers as you stay with your current provider for anything the panels don't cover. Any surplus energy you don't use can be stored in a battery for use at night or can be exported to the electricity grid, earning you extra income.
